Get Your Body and Mind Ready for Pregnancy

Tamsen Carson, Physician Assistant, Renown shares health tips to get your body and mind ready for a baby

Preparation for a major change in your life, such as being pregnant and having a child, is important. Renown Scribbles

During pregnancy, your body and mind will go through major changes so making healthy lifestyle changes is a great way to prepare yourself and your partner.

  • Quit tobacco, alcohol or drug use.
  • Get to a healthy weight for your height.
  • Start a basic exercise program.

Many midwives have the saying “You wouldn’t show up to a marathon the day of the race without training, and labor and delivery is no different.” Birthing a child is very difficult physically, so continuing a healthy exercise and diet regiment throughout your pregnancy will help you in the long run.

Preparing mentally may be more challenging, because you will experience mood changes and unexpected shifts in hormones.

  • Start a meditation/breathing technique practice.
  • Talk openly and honestly with your partner about parenting styles, hopes for your child and expectations you have for your delivery.
  • Be open and flexible to any changes that may come your way.

Much like you cannot control the movements of the baby inside you, you have to be flexible with a lot of what pregnancy does to you. Mothers that seem to do the best during pregnancy are ones that aren’t strict with their expectations and are open to trying new things to manage the common discomforts and mood changes in pregnancy.

If you are considering becoming pregnant, be sure to talk to your doctor so you can be best prepared, both physically and mentally.
