Spiritual Center and Sanctuary Now Open

The new Spiritual Center and Estelle J. Kelsey Interfaith Sanctuary at Renown Regional Medical Center is being celebrated and introduced to the community in a series of events May 6-12.

Renown is expanding its Spiritual Care program to meet the diverse spiritual needs of patients in our region. May 6-12, Renown Health will celebrate the new Spiritual Center and Estelle J. Kelsey Interfaith Sanctuary at Renown Regional Medical Center.

The space first opened in 1964 with an altar, pews, benches for kneeling and a more traditional feel. Today, the Spiritual Center & Estelle J. Kelsey Interfaith Sanctuary will become a resource center and multi-use space that will fully embrace all faith practices and the diversity of patients, their loved ones and caregivers.

“This history of the chapel is long and very special to Renown,” says Sean Savoy, Spiritual Center project developer. “Now we want everyone to feel welcome — all denominations and all faiths.”

A series of events are scheduled May 6-12 to commemorate the re-opening.

Spiritual Health and Wellness Forum and Reception
5:30-8 p.m. May 7 at Mack Auditorium, Renown Regional Medical Center

Dr. Tony Slonim, president and CEO, will be joined by community members for a discussion on the role of spiritual care and the importance of addressing spiritual health and inner well-being in healthcare. During this event, longtime Renown chaplain Bob Stover will also receive a special recognition from Renown’s Spiritual Care department and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nevada Interfaith Association. Refreshments will be served and a reception will follow the forum.

Spiritual Center Interfaith Dedication and Celebration
Noon to 3 p.m., May 12 at Renown Regional Medical Center

This ceremony will begin in Tahoe Tower Lobby and move to the Spiritual Center on the 1st Floor, Sierra Tower. It will be presided over by Renown’s spiritual caregivers and will involve leaders of northern Nevada’s multi-faith community giving prayers and blessings at the space, accompanied by music. The community will be invited to ask for prayers for loved ones during the ceremony. A celebration in the Tahoe Tower Lobby will follow the dedication.
