Busy days can be detracting you from your health and wellness goals. Refocus with these 10 easy life changes.
(via Prevention) If you’re finding your New Year’s healthier living resolve is starting to slip, it could be that the day-to-day hustle, lists and routines are getting in the way.
To stay on track and motivated, apply a few of these simple changes daily to help you meet your goals.
1. Morning meditation
If your mornings are rushed and your mind is already at the office well before 8 a.m., try setting the tone of the day with a short meditation. Take 5 to 10 minutes to watch the sunrise, take a few deep breaths and clear your head of thoughts or plans.
2. Skip the sugar
If you’re reaching for a soda or a candy bar as a sweet way to keep your energy up, it might be time to cut down the sugar in your diet. An apple is an ideal sweet treat and it’s packed with soluble fiber and vitamin C.
3. Plan a trip
Daydreaming about sunshine, blue water and warm beaches? It might be time to plan a vacation. Research has shown that happiness spikes during the planning phase of an upcoming trip.
4. Homemade salad dressing
When you’re watching your waistline, salad is often a top meal choice on the menu. If you’ve found skipping the creamy dressings, cheese and croutons toppings have left your leafy greens a little flat than it might be time to spice it up with your own homemade dressing. Try one of these easy recipes.
5. Drop the phone
Resist the impulse to whip out the phone when it strikes. You might feel uncomfortable or anxious at first, but it will pass. Try “turning off” from technology every week so you can fully relax.
6. Keep your focus
Stress, deadlines, class projects and kids appointments may be a way of life, but so is remembering what you want out of life. Try this: Sit in a comfortable position, breath, close your eyes, and mentally repeat the words “I am” for 5 minutes. Next, ask yourself “What do I want?” two to four times. You don’t need to answer it; let your mind settle and see what bubbles up.
7. Trade that pat of butter for some olive oil
Not only is it better for your health – hello, cholesterol lowering monounsaturated fatty acids – but olive oil tastes just as good on bread, in pasta and on popcorn. Swap it out at your next meal and see for yourself! Finding the right olive oil is easier than you think.
8. Skip the afternoon slump with yoga
Stand and ground your feet by pressing into all four corners of each sole. Bend knees and fold forward from hips, keeping back straight. Hang for 10 to 30 deep breaths and then slowly rise. You’ll improve blood flow to your brain and stretch your spine. A simple workday yoga break will not only improve your mental outlook, but also contribute to better posture and overall health.
9. Prep smoothie packs for the week
Smoothies are a great way to start the day and can be mixed with a variety of high nutrient fruits and vegetables, but prepping them can be bothersome. Take some time each week to measure out the solid ingredients into freezer containers, starting with hard heavy ingredients, followed by leafy greens, and finally soft foods. Each morning, just add the liquids, blend and enjoy!
10. Leave your shoes at the door
Keeping your home clean is another way to improve your health. One extra step in keeping germs from entering is by stopping them at the door by taking your shoes off.
