There are a few simple rules that men should follow for healthier skin. Anna Ellis, APRN, Nurse Practitioner at Renown Dermatology, Laser and Skin Care, shared some advice for men who might not know the importance of skin care.
Sun damage and dry skin are the most common skin problems that men face, shared Ellis. Men can prevent their skin from becoming damaged and dry by following a simple four step routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and wearing sunscreen.
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Washing your face twice a day, or at least before bed, will help get rid of dirt buildup from the day. Ellis said that using a gentle, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic cleanser will prevent your skin from having a negative reaction.
Get Rid of Dead Skin
Exfoliating is an important skin care step that a lot of men might forget. A chemical or physical exfoliate will remove dead skin and may allow your moisturizer to work better. An easy way to exfoliate is by gently rubbing a warm, wet washcloth on your face, but the best way to find out what exfoliation product is right for you is by talking to your dermatologist.
Hydrate Your Skin
Hydrating your face may prevent wrinkles and excess oil buildup. A simple moisturizer that is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic should do the trick for most men. However, using a thicker moisturizer in dry or cold climates might be beneficial. It is important to remember to moisturize before bed.
A sunscreen that has 30 to 50 SPF with UVA and UVB protection is a must, said Ellis. Sunscreen should be worn every day of the year, no matter the weather or amount of time we are exposed to the sun.
