We talked to Heidi Nicol, licensed aesthetician with Renown Dermatology, Laser and Skin Care, to learn about the perfect nighttime skin care routine.
We cannot stress how important it is to cleanse your skin at night. The temptation to go to bed without doing this can be great sometimes, but it is so detrimental to the skin to skip this. One night of not cleaning your face can age the skin a week.
There is a good reason that they call it beauty sleep. Nighttime is the time to think of repair. All day long you have been wearing product, sunscreen and make-up. Your skin has secreted oil all day and you’ve probably unconsciously been touching your face all day, transferring bacteria to the face. You will be well rewarded if you follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Cleanser
Choose the right product for your skin type. I recommend the double cleanse method. You will wash your face twice; once to remove all the make-up and grime and then again to cleanse the skin. Apply cleanser and massage into the skin with a gentle circular motion. Then you want to rinse, rinse, and rinse again with lukewarm water. Washcloths should not be used because they can be too rough on the face.
Step 2: Toner
This will refresh your skin and bring it to the right PH level.
Step 3: Serums
Use a serum for your skin type and needs. If you use more than one serum, it is a good idea to alternate them instead of layering. This is also a good time to apply a retinol or prescription Retin-A.
Step 4: Moisturize
Use the right moisturizer for your skin type.
Step 5: Eye Cream
This is important for the delicate tissue of the eye area.
If you are too exhausted at bedtime to do this routine, it is perfectly fine to do this earlier in the evening.
