The Nevada Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Renown Health are teaming up for “Walk with a Doc.” The second Saturday of each month, you can join docs in a brisk and healthy walk around the Sparks Marina and listen to an insightful guest speaker. The mission: to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages.
No gear. No rules. Just walk! Walk with a Doc is happening in northern Nevada, and you’re invited. The next one takes place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Sparks Marina.
And here’s an exciting development: We are now planning a monthly guest speaker about an interesting pediatric topic of interest to local parents. For the next walk, Dr. Jose Cucalon, Renown Pediatrician, will discuss smoking cessation and how can you talk to your kids about the dangers of smoking.
Reasons to Walk with a Doc
So you likely intuitively know you’re supposed to walk for better health. But we’re guessing you may not know the specific reasons why.
In that case: Here’s the “why”!

Also, according to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. And research has shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour of regular exercise!
So why not do all of the above while walking at your own pace, chatting with your friends or family — and also asking your questions of local physicians?

Dr. Vanessa Slots, division chief of Renown Pediatrics, was elected secretary/treasurer to Nevada AAP. Her position will help bring northern Nevada into this important organization that serves as a professional voice for child health.
