Motivate U: Change Takes Tenacity (and a Great Trainer)

In the third installment of our series, we introduce you to the “motivators” — the trainers at each of the six gyms in Hometown Health’s Motivate U Program.

Six local gyms are participating in Motivate U, Hometown Health’s eight-week fitness challenge: Evoke Fitness, Double Diamond Athletic Club, Sierra Strength and Fitness, Eagle Fitness, Freestyle Martial Arts and Performance EDU.

“I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a lot of these people and I really believe in group fitness,” says Mena Spodobalski, owner of Evoke Fitness. “I think that people are motivated being in a group and thinking, ‘wow, if she can do, I can do it.'”

Motivate U: Creating Lasting Change

Motivate U, Hometown Health’s eight-week fitness challenge, is an opportunity for local residents to create lasting lifestyle changes. Among the participants are employees from various entities in Reno that offer the insurance benefit and Healthy Tracks program. About 700 members of Hometown Health applied to compete in this year’s challenge. Ultimately 200 members were selected through a lottery.

The participants receive a free gym membership and training as they compete to win the grand prize for the greatest weight lost or most positive change in their body mass index.

“We get 20 to 25 people. We have them for eight weeks. We get to teach them the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. If we can get them going for that sixth of the year and they can keep going, we have seen amazing changes,” says Robert Conatser, owner of Sierra Strength and Fitness.
