In 2016 we announced a visionary community-based health study that could unlock a new model for healthcare in Nevada. Renown Health and the Desert Research Institute (DRI) collaborated with 23andMe, a leading personal genetics company, to offer thousands of northern Nevada residents the opportunity to volunteer for research and gain access to their individual genetic information for free.
The study will allow DRI scientists to combine health and population data from Renown with participant’s genetic data, health-related survey responses, and environmental databases. Researchers will analyze and model public health risks ranging from disease and illness, to the effects of air quality on the health of Nevadans.
Our initial pilot study has reached capacity but may be extended in the future.

Where do we go from here?
Renown Health, DRI, and the DRI Foundation have combined resources to realize a new model for health science, the Renown Institute for Health Innovation (IHI).
The IHI science and medicine research team is now beginning to process and analyze the data from the study using 23andMe’s Genotyping Services for Research platform and in-house genetics and data analysis tools.
Beyond the study with 23andMe, IHI staff will work to integrate environmental data and socio-economic determinants to help Nevada solve some of its most complex environmental health problems.
One of IHI’s goals is to expand the population health study to many, many more Nevadans. Join our wait list to be notified when the study is re-opened.
