Earlier this fall, the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Nevada’s only statewide public medical school, and Renown Health, the region’s integrated healthcare network, formed a steering committee to discuss a formal strategic partnership between the two organizations.
This partnership, in part, will serve to bring much-needed physicians to the area.
Thomas Schwenk, MD, dean of the School of Medicine, says the task force met for the first time in October and that much will be gained from this partnership.
“We talked about expanding clinical teaching and residency and keeping medical students in Reno,” he says. “We are working very hard towards creating a full, four-year campus in Reno.”
There are plans to continue to enhance the teaching program and explore ideas such as a pediatric residency training program, expanding clinical research and developing clinical research programs.
According to Schwenk, by April 2015 the committee hopes to have a substantial agreement that will drive further discussions. “We hope to have an overarching agreement for general terms and working relationships. Those will form into more specific committees,” he said. “After those things are established, initiatives will follow.”
