Learn about National Pancake Day and the 36 Hours for Kids Radiothon. Both efforts will support the continuing efforts at Renown’s Children’s Hospital, the local Children’s Miracle Network hospital.

When it comes to teaching children the importance of charity and compassion, we have all heard the old saying, “It is better to give than receive.” This month, two upcoming events can help kids experience the value of charity and empathize with children whose medical needs are much greater than their own.

National Pancake Day, March 8

For the past 16 years on National Pancake Day, IHOP restaurants in our region serve up a free short stack of pancakes in exchange for a small donation to support the Children’s Miracle Network. This year on Tuesday, March 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., IHOP restaurants in the region will continue the tradition. As the only CMN Hospital in northern Nevada, Renown Children’s Hospital will receive 100 percent of donations. Since 2008, IHOP has raised more than $75,000 locally with a goal to raise $18,000 this year.

Here are a few ways to give and receive and help reach this year’s goal.

Host a Grandparent Pancake Feast

Have your children invite their grandparents for a pancake feast — on them! The grandchildren will learn the importance of sharing their time with their grandparents, and for a small donation from their piggy banks, can make a difference in another child’s life.

Make a Pancake Lunch Date

Invite your child for a lunch date over pancakes. As a parent, you get a little fun in the middle of your day, and your child gets a break from routine school lunches.

There’s Nothing Wrong With Breakfast for Dinner

Pancakes are more than a breakfast treat. Flip your day and let IHOP serve up dinner for the whole family all in the name of charity.

36 Hours for Kids Radiothon, March 10-11

Then just two days after Pancake Day festivities, listen to the “36 Hours for Kids Radiothon” on Alice 96.5 FM. The event runs from 6 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, until 6 p.m. on Friday, March 11. Just like years past, Bill, Connie and RJ will be broadcasting live from the Fianna’s Healing Garden Overlook inside Renown Regional Medical Center. Radio listeners will meet some of the hospital’s smallest patients who are navigating very complex medical conditions. With increased awareness of the needs of kids in our region, the station hopes to raise thousands of dollars to support continuing miracles at Renown Children’s Hospital. Listen throughout the day with your child to understand the needs of others and hear how funds raised make a difference for children in our community.

The benefits of teaching children charity and compassion help make positive changes in our community. Kids receive a powerful boost in self-esteem when they realize they can make a difference in someone’s life. “And as corny as it sounds,” says Patricia Schiff Estess, a New York City writer and the author of “Kids, Money & Values,” “when you help a child help others, you are helping to create a better world.”
