Renown Health President and CEO, Tony Slonim, M.D., Dr.PH., FACHE, talks about the importance of healthcare transparency and about Renown Health’s work to help people make informed healthcare decisions.
When faced with a large investment, it is typical for a person to research their decision. For most people, the idea of purchasing a car without access to performance and safety data, or a home without an inspection, would be unacceptable. However, making the most important decisions of all – those affecting our health – have historically been a complicated, confusing process. There has not been a clear path for healthcare consumers to follow for researching information about cost and quality. Yet we all acknowledge that access to information about the quality and price of healthcare services helps people make better decisions about their care.
Healthcare Transparency Serves Patients, Improves Care
As a healthcare leader and physician, I find this disappointing and unacceptable. Our job is to serve our patients; part of that, then, should include helping them make informed decisions regarding their care. At Renown Health, we believe healthcare transparency is an integral part of providing quality care. It should be easy for patients and referring physicians to access data about our clinical outcomes. Making this information easier to access and increasing our open dialogue around quality initiatives keeps us accountable, helps to accelerate improvement, and also leads to more informed healthcare consumers. We are committed to addressing internal barriers that hinder our ability to share important information and deliver effective, efficient care.
Renown believes it is our responsibility to help people make informed decisions about where to access their healthcare.
