CEO Blog: Experience is the Best Teacher

Renown Health President and CEO Tony Slonim, M.D., DrPH, explains how a serious health crisis shaped the way he approaches patient care today.

This year, I am approaching my 15th anniversary of being cancer free. As one might expect, the experience of overcoming a health crisis shaped many aspects of my life, especially my work as a healthcare administrator. I bring to my work first-hand knowledge of the importance of seamless care coordination, a holistic view of health and clinical excellence, and how the absence of any one of these components — even for a moment — can have serious repercussions for a person’s health.

I feel enormously fortunate to have had access to early detection and an outstanding care team. That knowledge stays with me and drives my work — and Renown Health’s work — toward improving health equity. Our organization has a rich history serving as a safety net to our community, delivering outstanding clinical care and a warm patient experience to every family in our community, regardless of their ability to pay. It is a responsibility we take seriously, because we believe everyone deserves to have access to first-class care.
