Breast Health at Renown: New Tech Includes 3D Mammography

In a three-part video series, BestMedicine goes in depth on breast health with one patient’s story and expert advice from physicians and nurses. In this third video, Renown’s experts talk about upgrades in breast cancer screenings over the years, including the use of 3D mammography and the automated breast volume scanner.

The technology used at the Renown Breast Health Center has made it easier than ever to detect and properly diagnose breast health concerns.

“Women need to know that we cure most breast cancers,” says Brian Juell, MD, FACS, Oncology Surgeon and Renown Breast Health Center Medical Director. “And that when we find them at the earliest possible stage, that improves the statistics in terms of cure rate.”

This new technology includes the use of 3D mammography, which takes multiple images via X-ray of the breast tissue to recreate a 3D picture of the breast. This is different from the traditional 2D mammography, which obtains a single image. There’s also the automated breast volume scanner, which uses high-frequency sound waves targeted at the breast. The scans provide physicians with a 3D volumetric image of the entire breast.

Your Breast Health: What You Need to Know

No matter which technology is used, it’s important for all women to regularly check breast health. April Durnil, who was treated at Renown Breast Health Center, puts it well in this final video in our series: “It’s something that you have to do. It’s for your health, it’s for your family, it’s for the people that love you.”

Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention

Breast cancer begins when abnormal cells in the breast grow out of control. These cells form tumors that can grow into the surrounding tissue and spread to other parts of the body. Breast cancer occurs mostly in women, but men can also develop breast cancer.
