Be bold and get creative this grilling season by adding a healthy kick to your burgers!

If you’re working on eating healthier, or you’re thinking of cutting back on some of your favorite treats, don’t be so quick to think all burgers are created alike — as in high calories, fat and dripping sauces. By incorporating some fresh and local ingredients, your favorite burger could easily become your new go-to nutritious and delicious meal.

“Many grocery stores and food chains now offer organic, pastured and/or grass-fed protein options. Still others are making changes to incorporate protein choices without antibiotics and hormones. As your budget allows, buy the best quality you can afford,” suggests Kathy Disney, rregistered dietitian with Renown Health.

When it comes to creating a healthy backyard barbecue burger feast, get creative with some unique toppings and protein alternatives:

Tantalizing Toppings
Avocado Topper

  • Leafy greens such as spinach, arugula
  • Avocado
  • Fermented vegetables
  • Fresh salsa

Savory SpreadsHummus Spread

  • Hummus
  • Pesto – make your own with fresh herbs!
  • Greek yogurt with herbs
  • Dijon or spicy mustard

Perk Up Your Protein

  • Picky eaters? Add sautéed veggies such as peppers, mushrooms or onions to traditional hamburger patties.
  • Explore your meat options with lean beef, bison, turkey, chicken and even salmon.
  • Don’t forget meatless choices like black bean burgers or portabella mushroom patties.

The recipe below is a delicious and healthier incorporation of mushrooms, onions, protein and lean meat!
