Love Your Dog, Love Your Heart
Owning a dog may be just what the doctor ordered especially if you have heart disease.
According to the American Heart Association, pet owners, and in particular those who have dogs, are 54 percent more likely to reach recommended levels of physical activity.
“Pets not only can be good companions and add joy and satisfaction to people’s everyday lives, but pets may also provide some health benefits that are now being recognized,” notes cardiologist John W. Grinsell, MD, FACC, of Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health. “Not surprisingly, dog owners tend to get more physical activity simply from walking their dogs.”
In fact, in one study of more than 5,200 adults, dog owners were more active than non-dog owners. The benefits don’t stop there. Again, when compared with those who don’t have dogs, dog owners enjoy:
- Lower blood pressure
- Lower cholesterol
- Lower rate of obesity
- Less stress, and better coping mechanisms
