Renown Skilled Nursing resident Mary Mull shares her passion for music with Healing Arts musician Colin Ross, who has played for her every Tuesday in her room for about eight years. The bedside music program began in 2007 and is a part of Renown’s Healing Arts program, which aims to bring inspiration, comfort and strength to patients during their most difficult moments.

“I am one of those people who love music. I have been like that since I was a child,” says Renown Skilled Nursing resident Mary Mull.

Mary shares her passion for music with Healing Arts musician Colin Ross, who has played for her every Tuesday in her room for about eight years. Colin’s music takes her back to her childhood – growing up in Chicago with a dad who often practiced with his band at home.

“Colin plays ‘Sweet Home Chicago’ all the time for me because he knows I love it. I miss my Chicago,” Mary says.

The bedside music therapy program began in 2007 and is a part of Renown’s Healing Arts program, which aims to bring inspiration, comfort and strength to patients during their most difficult moments. Since 2008, Renown has installed 1,500 original works of art and 1,500 fine art posters to enhance its healing environments, including Fianna’s Healing Garden and John & Sue Dermody Children’s Healing Garden, and also offers pet therapy, a bedside art program and a Healing Arts Performance Series.

Colin, who is often seen on the ground floor of the Tahoe Tower playing the grand piano, also plays weekly for the residents at Renown Skilled Nursing.

“No matter what mood I come here in, I usually leave in a really good mood,” Colin says. “I feel like I’ve done something. It’s not something major, but it’s an incremental way to make people’s day better.”
